Silver Spring, Maryland, June 17, 2008—SILVERDOCS presents THROW DOWN YOUR HEART directed by Sascha Paladino. Béla Fleck, the American banjo virtuoso, travels to Africa to explore the little-known roots of the instrument and record an album. Fleck’s riveting journey takes him through Uganda, Tanzania, The Gambia, and Mali, where he transcends the barriers of language and culture through a shared passion for music. A special performance by Béla Fleck joined by Cheick Hamala Diabaté, malian n’goni player, follows the Q&A with the director.

3:30 p.m. SILVERDOCS Conference-Student Pitch: Young Filmmakers Pitch The Pros.

3:45 p.m. Director Michael Christofferson presents MILOSEVIC ON TRIAL, which documents former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic on trial for crimes against humanity. At 4:55 p.m. General Wesley Clark, Edward Joseph, UN eyewitness, and Michael Christofferson, filmmaker, will participate in a panel discussion moderated by Tom Gjelten, NPR.

4:15 p.m. SILVERDOCS presents “Some/Body,” a free showing of short films featuring 52 PERCENT, THE CHAMP, and SMILE PINKI.

4:30 p.m. DOCU-CLUB “IN THE WORKS” presents STAGES by the Meerkat Media Collective, a film about a group of older Puerto Rican women and youth of color who unite in New York City's Lower East Side to create an original play based on their life stories.

5:30 p.m. Filmmaker Patrick Reed presents TRIAGE: DR. JAMES ORBINSKI’S HUMANITARIAN DILEMMA. The story focuses on Dr. James Orbinski, Nobel Prize Winner on behalf of Doctors Without Borders, and his brave trip to Rwanda. Panel Discussion follows film featuring both director and subject.
