Chief Communications Officer and SEVP, Corporate Marketing and Affairs

David C. Leavy is Discovery Communications' chief spokesman, responsible for all domestic and international media relations, corporate communications, public affairs, corporate social responsibility, speechwriting, and global events for the world's number-one nonfiction media company that reaches more than 1.5 billion cumulative subscribers in over 170 countries.  Discovery empowers people to explore their world and satisfy their curiosity through 100-plus networks, led by Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Science Channel, Planet Green, and Investigation Discovery, as well as leading consumer and educational products and services, and a diversified portfolio of digital media services including HowStuffWorks.com.

In addition to serving as chief spokesperson, Leavy coordinates the communications activities among the company's operating divisions and business units to ensure consistent messaging and a unified global brand.  He also develops public relations campaigns for top business priorities and the executive management team. 

Before joining Discovery in 2000, Leavy served as Senior Director of Public Affairs and Chief Spokesman for the National Security Council and Deputy White House Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs.  In that position, Leavy handled all press issues relating to foreign policy and chaired the Interagency Public Affairs Working Group that coordinated the Clinton Administration's long range strategic messaging on international policy. Leavy developed the communications strategies for NATO's military action in Kosovo, the State Visit of Chinese President Jiang Zemin, U.S. military action in Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan and East Timor, as well as the Senate's ratification of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Leavy previously served as Assistant Press Secretary at the State Department and the White House Press Office. He graduated from Colby College.
