Lori Cuthbert

As Editor-in-Chief of Discovery News, Lori over the past 12 years has been instrumental in establishing DiscoveryNews.com as the go-to source for everyday news through the unique and fascinating lens of science and technology. In her long and varied journalistic career, Lori has been a food editor/writer and a foreign financial news correspondent, in addition to authoring numerous fiction and non-fiction pieces for The Baltimore Review, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal (Europe) and Sailing, among others. She leads the Discovery News team of text and video journalists, and also covers stories for the site — from the discovery of water on Mars to new findings about the elusive giant squid. Lori is based in St. Michaels, Maryland.

Beyond the Bio

  • The biggest story I've covered was...as a financial journalist, I covered the economic reunification of the Germanys after the Berlin Wall fell. Bringing together two economies — one capitalist, one communist — was so fascinating, not only from a monetary policy aspect, but also from a human perspective. As a science journalist, the landing of the Mars Rover on the red planet is probably at the top of my most exciting story list. However, the biggest story, heartbreakingly, has to be 9/11 and its aftermath from a science and technology angle.
  • When I'm not leading the Discovery News team and covering breaking science news, you'll find me...playing violin, doing pilates or yoga, rollerblading, working in my vegetable garden, looking after my various pets and creating in my kitchen.
  • I became interested in science thanks to...being a restless, easily bored child whose mother often said, "Go play outside!" I would wander through the woods around my home, where I discovered bugs under rocks, fish in streams, birds in trees, and a lifelong love of the sciences.
  • Favorite Quote: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - William Shakespeare
