Amazon Uncovered

THIS FEBRUARY, ANIMAL PLANET TAKES YOU DEEP INTO AN UNTAMED RAINFOREST WONDERLAND IN AMAZON UNCOVERED

Carrying one-fifth of the world's total river flow, home to one-third of all species in the world, and covering about 40 percent of South America, the Amazon basin is the world's largest drainage area. Teeming with flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world, this tropical area is home to a diverse range of human, animal and plant life. Animal Planet takes you into this beautiful wilderness with the four-part special, AMAZON UNCOVERED, premiering every Saturday, starting February 7 at 2100 hrs (9:00 pm SIN/HK). Episodes encore on Sunday at 0200 hrs (2:00 am) and 0600 hrs (6:00 am).

In the 1980s, we were told that an area of the Amazon rainforest the size of Belgium was being destroyed every year. Every tree was irreplaceable; and with the trees, an unimaginable number of plants and animals were also being lost. By now you might expect there to be nothing left... yet 87 percent of the rainforest remains untouched. Were we all duped? In BATTLE FOR THE AMAZON, deforestation and other previously unasked questions are addressed in an attempt to dispel some of the myths surrounding the Amazon rainforest.

Embark on an extraordinary pioneering journey deep into the heart of a dangerous and beautiful world, beneath the surface of the great river in AMAZON ABYSS . Amazingly, scientists have only just discovered that the Amazon and its tributaries have astonishing hidden depths - 120-meter deep pools inhabited by some of Earth's strangest creatures: primitive dolphins, weird electric knifefish, giant black piranha, six-foot long man-eating catfish and oversized freshwater stingrays to name but a few. Join the experts on their search below the surface for these denizens of the deep, as many are filmed for the very first time.

Every year, without fail, the Amazon floods an area the size of England and affects everything that lives there. MIGHTY AMAZON takes us through what is undoubtedly the greatest cycle of flooding seen on this planet. In the dry season, when the rivers are at their lowest, giant river turtles, the largest freshwater turtles in the world, emerge from the water in the thousands to nest on sandy beaches. The low water concentrates fish populations, making hunting easier for giant otters and black caiman - two of the Amazon's largest and rarest animals. In the murky waters of the larger channels, fish have developed superior senses that help them find their way around. For the first time, infrared equipment reveals this hidden world - a world where strange-looking electric fish communicate using electric pulses and electric eels stun prey with jolts that can measure 400 volts.

AMAZON - SUPER RIVER is the story of a river that almost splits a continent in half and contains a fifth of all the river water on the planet. With the help of the best wildlife imagery, fantastic aerial and space photography and spectacular visual effects, take the ultimate look at the biggest river system on the planet, from its primordial origins to the life that now survives there.

AMAZON UNCOVERED takes you on an exhilarating journey from the Andes to the Atlantic to explore an untameable super force - the most diverse place on earth, the Amazon.
