DISCOVERY CHANNEL TAKES A LOOK AT THE RARE PHYSIOLOGICAL OCCURRENCE OF SURVIVING DEATH
- True accounts of people who were declared dead but returned to life -

When we die, our brains shut down and our bodies begin a process of decay. But what happens when these processes do not occur? Discovery Channel's SURVIVING DEATH examines the extraordinary experiences of people who have died and returned to life, looking at the rare physiology behind exactly how the body can physically die, and then bring itself back to life. These extraordinary cases have led to new medical breakthroughs in treating patients and how medicine might actually be closer to combating life's ultimate enemy: death.

In the process of death, is there a window of time during which the body can still be resuscitated? If so, how can we extend that window? These are some of the critical questions that medicine is trying to answer as doctors and medical researchers seek to understand the physical limits of the human body and mind. SURVIVING DEATH tells the gripping stories of people who were declared dead - only to be revived by medicine or a miracle. First-hand accounts and dramatic recreations of the fatal events, combined with computed generated imagery will bring to life the survivors' near-death experiences as the documentary examines this nascent area of medical science.

For most, death is final.  But what about those who come back? Ward Krenz, who snowmobiled into an icy lake, was dead for three hours. Sade Davis was seven months pregnant when she drowned in a chilly lake. Kathie Harden, a 34-year-old cardiac arrest victim, was put on ice in the ER. Dr Sam Parnia, a Death and Consciousness expert, believes that cold temperatures protect the body against the damaging effects of physiological death, and increase the chances of bringing a person back to life. Find out how, in SURVIVING DEATH  - Stone Cold.

In SURVIVING DEATH - Bodily Trauma, we meet a few extremely fortunate people who were brought back to life after being "killed" by extreme cases of trauma. Hunter Cairns was struck in the heart by an 80 mile-an-hour fastball and died instantly. Patrick Mitton was shocked by 6,800 volts of electricity. Zack Dunlap's skull was crushed by an ATV. But like many others, they crossed over into the realm of the unknown and survived. Hear their incredible stories as Discovery Channel explores the medical mysteries of SURVIVING DEATH, this month.
