Bomber Boys

Image 1 / 10

Investigate the compelling story of Britain's Royal Air Force Bomber Command crews, whose mission was to destroy Germany's industrial heartland through thousands of nightly raids, in extraordinary one-off special ‘Bomber Boys'. Although they played an important part in weakening the enemy war effort, the attacks came at a cost: the life expectancy of volunteers was just two weeks, and of the 125,000 who joined up, 55,000 died, 15,000 were wounded and 10,000 taken prisoner. The Germans' hatred of the pilots they dubbed 'Terror Fliers' was such that some downed airmen were even sent to Buchenwald, one of the most notorious Nazi concentration camps. Speaking for the first time about their experiences, the last survivors reveal how they came close to death while held there, suffering malnutrition, disease and brutal punishments at the hands of SS guards. Also featuring rare colour archive footage of the squadron's air raids, this poignant and compelling programme pays tribute to these the forgotten heroes of World War Two.
