The Challenge: My Iron Man Dad

Premiering exclusively in the UK on Discovery Channel this June, THE CHALLENGE: MY IRON MAN DAD is an award-winning feature documentary about a father’s epic attempt to complete the UK’s Ironman triathlon whilst carrying his disabled son the entire course. On 13th June 2015, everyman Alex Smith set out to accomplish the superhuman feat with his son who suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a muscle wasting disease. For most people, running a marathon is a lifetime achievement to cherish and be proud of, but for Alex Smith this was only the beginning. Ironman triathlons are considered one of the most gruelling one-day sporting events in the world, consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle ride and a 26.2 mile marathon. Upping the stakes further still, Alex’s eight year old son Harrison weighs 40kg. Alex carried him the whole way, hauling him in a catamaran behind him as he swam, pulling him in a trailer as he cycled, then pushing him in a racing chair as he ran. The father and son completed the Challenge Denmark Ironman Distance Triathlon in
15 hours, 36 minutes and 29 seconds. They also raised over £30,000 for Harrison’s Fund, a charity set up by Alex and his family to find a cure for the disease that affects 1 in 3,500 boys.
