Benny Sandoval has served 17 years of his 25-year sentence for first-degree attempted murder, a crime he committed at the age of 16. Steve Barela has served 21 years for the second-degree murder of his wife.

Their fates are now in the hands of state parole boards who must decide if they're safe for release or should remain incarcerated.

This three-part mini-series brings viewers inside the emotional and high-stakes process of parole hearings. Through first-hand accounts, Judgement Day: Prison or Parole? showcases the delicate balance that parole board members must consider between forgiveness and freedom and risk and responsibility.

Oscar-nominated documentarian Joe Berlinger pulls back the curtain to give viewers a unique and unprecedented insight into each step of the parole process.

Each revealing episode sheds new light on the crimes as the parole boards revisit the crimes, while also hearing the often opposing view expressed by victims and victims’ families, to ultimately decide if the incarcerated is safe to re-enter society.
