Whitey Bulger: The Making Of A Monster
Premieres Mondays from 9th November, 10pm
To his beachfront neighbours in Santa Monica, he was a kind old man who left milk on his doorstep for neighbourhood cats. But to the FBI, he was second only to Osama Bin Laden on their Most Wanted List.
Whitey Bulger is one of the major crime figures in US history. He spent 16 years on the FBI's Most Wanted List as a fugitive Irish Mafia crime boss and is believed to have killed at least 19 people.
This one-off special provides the definitive account of Bulger, exploring the reasons for the sadistic criminal mastermind's insatiable need to gain power and control through intimidation and murder. His decade-long reign over Boston's mean streets was shrouded in bloodshed and fear. The calculated mastermind later became an FBI informant and continued to operate his business as usual whilst under their protection.
So where is he now? After two decades on the run, Bulger was apprehended in 2011, convicted of murdering 11 people, extortion, money laundering and weapons charges in 2013, and he now lives in a federal prison in Florida.
