Witness to Jonestown is a feature length documentary that takes an insider's look at an unforgettable American tragedy.‏ Through exclusive, rarely-seen footage that was shot inside the Peoples Temple on the eve and day of the disaster, MSNBC provides an intimate first-hand account of this unimaginable catastrophe. In "Witness to Jonestown," viewers will be introduced to many members and relatives affected by the massacre.

In 1977, controversial religious leader Jim Jones relocated with about 1,000 of his followers to form the cult commune of Jonestown in the jungles of Guyana. On November 18, 1978, U.S Congressman Leo J Ryan and several members of his party were killed by cult members after an investigatory visit. Jones orchestrated the largest mass suicide in modern history as over 900 of his followers were compelled to drink a cyanide-laced punch. Jones shot himself soon after.

Having lost two of its own journalists that fateful day, NBC News has a unique relationship to this story, and this powerful film features exclusive footage shot inside the compound on the eve and day of the horrific events.

Three decades later, investigators still try to understand the unbelievable-how so many people could follow a mad man to their destruction.
