Discovery Education and Girls Inc. Partner to Give Girls Across the Country Access to STEM Resources

-- Partnership will provide Girls Inc. network of 136,000 girls with access to Discovery Education’s STEM Camp resources --

September 24, 2013

NEW YORK, September 24, 2013 - Girls Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold, and Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-based digital content and professional development for K-12, announced a partnership to provide Discovery Education's STEM Camp resources to girls across the United States.

Yesterday, Senior Advisor to the President of the United States, Valerie Jarrett, announced this partnership at an Equal Futures anniversary event in New York City. The Girls Inc.-Discovery Education partnership will provide a dynamic series of standards-aligned STEM curricula built around the National Academy of Engineering's grand engineering challenges as well as providing opportunities for Girls Inc. educators and mentors to participate in a series of Discovery Education professional development opportunities. This professional development training will teach best practices for implementing innovative STEM curricula and will support the effective implementation of Discovery Education STEM Camp.

The Girls Inc.-Discovery Education partnership will utilize the network of local Girls Inc. affiliates across the U.S. and Canada that annually help 136,000 girls aged 6 - 18 gain substantive, informal education designed to inspire them so that they lead successful and productive lives.

Girls Inc. and Discovery Education are working together as part of the broader Equal Futures Partnership, a multinational campaign launched in 2012 by Valerie Jarrett and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and backed by UN Women, the World Bank, and leading businesses and non-profits, aimed at creating opportunities for women to participate fully in public life and to lead and benefit from inclusive economic growth.

Women employed in STEM fields earn on average 33 percent more than those employed in non-STEM fields, yet women represent only a quarter of all workers in STEM-related jobs. Girls Inc. is committed to helping girls see STEM as an option for their futures through interactive programs and introduction to women with STEM careers. Its professional staff and mentors provide hands-on activities that encourage girls to ask questions, persist, and solve problems and develop interest and skills in STEM subjects.
