Silver Spring, Md. (January 29, 2014) - Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced today the addition of several exclusive Discovery Channel programs to Discovery Education Streaming and Discovery Education Streaming Plus.  This new content offers students valuable insight into the history behind the U.S. Presidency and the White House and focuses on a variety of topics related to past presidential administrations, including the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Watergate scandal, the history behind Inauguration Day, and the role of the President's Chief of Staff.

Discovery Education Streaming and Discovery Education Streaming Plus are compelling, cross-curricular digital media services for grades K-12 that address multiple learning styles, support the Common Core State Standards, and inspire students to explore their world.  Available in more than half of all of U.S. schools, these services offer teachers and students a library of standards-aligned digital resources including videos, encyclopedia articles, audio files, songs, high-quality images, and more.

Discovery Channel content now available through Discovery Education Streaming and Discovery Education Streaming Plus includes:

  • The President's Gatekeepers: For the first time ever, all 20 living White House Chiefs of Staff come together to share their previously untold stories. This series profiles pivotal moments from the past nine presidential administrations and reveals how each Chief of Staff worked to transform the President's agenda into reality. In addition to looking at the day-to-day responsibilities of the Chief of Staff, the program showcases the role of the Chief of Staff in key events such as the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Cold War, the 2008 economic crisis, the assassination attempt on President Reagan, and more.
  • Flipping the White House: When a U.S. President is sworn into office at high noon on Inauguration Day, a hand-picked and highly trained team is tasked with transitioning the old administration out as the new administration moves in, all in less than six hours. The outgoing president exits the home on Inauguration Day, and the incoming president enters the home complete with pictures on the walls, books on the shelves, and socks in the drawers just a few hours later. This special interviews former White House staffers who describe the flipping process and share insight about past presidential transitions.
  • JFK: The Lost Tapes: Audio recordings from Air Force One, the Dallas Police Force, on-site radio reporters and top government officials reveal the riveting, behind-the-scenes story of the Kennedy assassination on November 22, 1963.  The program paints a vivid portrait of one of the greatest manhunts in American history and offers new insight into the final moments of President Kennedy's life.
  • All the President's Men Revisited: This program brings Watergate to life with riveting archival footage, shocking Oval Office recordings, and compelling new interviews with those who perpetuated the crimes, those who pursued them, and those who portrayed them. The presentation unravels the story that began with a "third-rate burglary attempt" and escalated into the first and only Presidential resignation in American history. A remarkable cast tells the tale, including Robert Redford, Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Stewart, Rachel Maddow, and others.

"The Discovery Channel programs recently added to Discovery Education's streaming services are both educational and engaging," said Monique Liles, a teacher at Babb Middle School in Georgia's Clayton County Schools. "This content empowers students to learn about our nation's leaders in ways that are simply not possible through the use of traditional text.  I plan to use these resources to create engaging classroom experiences in which my students can more deeply examine the individuals shaping American history."

In addition to this exclusive Discovery Channel content, students across the country can gain valuable knowledge about the U.S. presidency through Discovery Education's Virtual Field Trip series: Of the People: Live from the White House. The webinar series offers middle and high school students unique access to White House professionals, experts and personalities in a series of 30-minute virtual events broadcast live from the White House and open to all classrooms nationwide.  For more information on this Discovery Education Virtual Field Trip Series, visit http://www.discoveryeducation.com//Live/of-the-people-history-and-art-of-white-house.cfm

"We are thrilled to bring this new and unique Discovery Channel content to our services," said Dan Byerly, Director of Social Studies Content at Discovery Education. "When students are able to learn directly from primary sources and hear the recollection, reflections, and commentary of the people who not only witnessed history, but actually made history, they become expert journalists and historians inside their own classrooms."
