Discovery Channel announced today that veteran TV executive Chris Rantamaki has been named Senior Vice President of Production and Development.  Rantamaki will be responsible for executing production strategies as well as further expanding and diversifying Discovery's slate and acquisitions. Rantamaki will officially join April 20, based in Los Angeles, and report directly to Denise Contis, Executive Vice President of Production and Development for Discovery.  Sean Boyle, Matthew Kelly and Michael Sorensen will continue to oversee development and report to Contis.

Rantamaki joins Discovery from Viacom's Spike TV where he served for four years as Senior Vice President of Original Series.  His contributions helped Spike TV grow to become the most watched channel of the Viacom Media Networks in 2014.  He also played a significant role in broadening Spike TV's traditionally male-centric audience by reaching more female viewers (up +10% in W18-49 vs. FY'13 with its highest rating in the demo since FY'09).

Rantamaki's extensive unscripted experience includes developing Spike TV's highest-rated series, "Ink Master," which continues to grow in ratings and remains the longest-running unscripted series in the network's history.  Rantamaki also oversaw a successful portfolio of series including "Bar Rescue," which had its highest-rated season ever, along with "Catch A Contractor," "Tattoo Nightmares," and "Tattoo Nightmares:  Miami." He also worked on the upcoming financial unscripted series "Family Takeover."

Prior to Spike TV, Rantamaki spent four years at the Discovery Channel, where he was Vice President of Production, overseeing several marquee series including "Pitchmen" and two seasons of "The Colony."  He also has producing credits working for more than 15 years on a variety of reality staples including TLC's "Miami Ink" and "A Dating Story" as well as Fox's "Ambush Makeover."
