(New York) – On the heels of two of the most devastating hurricanes in recent memory, Science Channel takes an in-depth look at the reasons why these massive storms continue to get bigger and stronger. Featuring interviews with leading meteorologists, scientists, and engineers, who examine the basic science of hurricanes, SUPER HURRICANES: INSIDE MONSTER STORMS premieres Friday, September 22 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

“These two back-to-back hurricanes are not just a wake-up call to residents of coastal areas, but to scientists working to understand the origins and patterns of devastating weather events,” said Caroline Perez, Vice President of Production, Science Channel. “As Harvey and Irma have proven, these storms can be as unpredictable as they are deadly, and the more we can learn about their origins and lifespans, the better we can prepare for the next potentially catastrophic event.”

In the span of just over two weeks, two massive hurricanes barreled through the Atlantic Ocean, a staggering one-two punch unlike any in recorded history. The slow-moving, 280-mile wide Category 4 Hurricane Harvey pounded Texas with 130 mile per hour winds and dropped 50 inches of rain on the Houston area alone. When the rains finally stopped Harvey left a trail of destruction in its wake, damaging or destroying nearly 185,000 homes and 1,000 businesses, displacing 32,000 residents and leaving another 300,000 without electricity. Although the waters have yet to entirely recede, FEMA estimates Hurricane Harvey’s clean-up costs will run nearly $200 billion, including nearly half a million-people applying for federal disaster assistance.

Then on August 27th, meteorologists began tracking Hurricane Irma off the coast of Africa. As it traveled across the Atlantic, it grew and intensified. By September 5th, Irma had become a Category 5 beast that was nearly 425 miles wide with maximum winds of 185 miles per hour. It tore through the Caribbean on route to Florida. If that wasn’t enough, Hurricane Maria, another Category 5 storm, is currently doing damage in the Caribbean.

SUPER HURRICANES: INSIDE MONSTER STORMS is produced by ITN Productions for Science Channel. Executive Producers for ITN Productions are Ian Russell and Mike Welsh and showrunner is Julian Thomas. Michael Sorensen and Matthew Kelly of Anomaly Entertainment are Executive Producers. Caroline Perez is Executive Producer for Science Channel.
