August 1944: the Polish Underground Armia Krajowa strikes back at their Nazi oppressors in one of the bloodiest battles of the second World War. Battling street by street to reclaim their city, the men, women and children of Warsaw gamble everything for victory. ‘Battle For Warsaw’ reveals their heroic story. In this documentary Discovery World traces the tragic story of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising in which nearly a quarter of a million Polish people lost their lives. Outnumbered by more than 3 to 1 and fighting with only homemade or captured weapons, the citizens of Warsaw held out against the German panzer divisions for over two months, hoping to liberate their capital for themselves before the arrival of the Russian troops. The series includes rare archive material as well as genuine eye-witness accounts from some of the principal survivors.
