Brand new to Discovery Channel this April, WILD PLANET is a breath-taking documentary series that celebrates the unusual, the unexpected... and the downright bizarre, as it takes an extraordinary look at the world's greatest hotspots of biodiversity and evolution.

The six part series reveals incredible habitats where mutations have gone wild, creating unique species found nowhere else on earth. The series explores six strange worlds within worlds where it seems as if nature has thrown the rule book out the window and goes in for a closer look, revealing how the magic of evolution and the forces of nature have together shaped eccentric animals, eclectic lifestyles and unorthodox patterns of behaviour.

The journey begins in the Albertine Rift which covers 1% of Africa, but contains more species of vertebrate animal than anywhere else on the continent. Powerful forces below the Earth transformed the landscape and changed the climate. These radical changes forced animals and plants to mutate and evolve in strange ways in order to survive, including air breathing fish and prehistoric looking birds. The Rift also split our closest relatives, the chimpanzees, into two contrasting species, and may even hold the secrets of why our ancestors evolved to walk on two legs.

The exotic and bizarre animals don't stop there; WILD PLANET also travels to Borneo, India, China, Namibia and Central America where evolutionary mysteries, such as the strangest giant ape on earth, pygmy versions of the rhino, elephant and bear, as well as the world's rarest macaque and termite-eating sloth bears are brought to viewer's screens.
