(Silver Spring, MD.) – From the very beginning, Earth and the evolution of its inhabitants have been plagued by continual destruction and chaos. How, out of this cyclical devastation, has human life gotten to where it is today? And could another mass extinction be part of our future?

In an eight-part mini-series beginning Thursday, February 12, at 9 PM (ET/PT), ANIMAL ARMAGEDDON sheds light on the evolution of Earth’s amazing creatures and reveals the fragile and perilous nature of our planet. This series brings to life an unprecedented vision of ancient Earth set against a backdrop of global catastrophe and major extinctions. Throughout the 600 million year history of animal existence, significant extinctions have plagued Earth. These epic catastrophes killed off millions of creatures. The chilling fact is that 99.9 percent of all animal life that has ever lived is now extinct. Using cutting edge research and the latest scientific theories, ANIMAL ARMAGEDDON transports viewers to the center of the most horrific disasters in the history of our planet.

“ANIMAL ARMAGEDDON is a compelling and innovative program that shows the violent struggles that plagued our planet and its creatures,” says Marjorie Kaplan, president and general manager of Animal Planet Media. “Incredible CGI brings these ancient creatures to life, destruction and then life again – from the tiniest organisms to the first mammals – giving viewers insight into evolution and survival.”

From a cosmic gamma ray burst bombarding the atmosphere triggering the very first mass extinction to an asteroid the size of Mt. Everest slamming into the Yucatan, killing off the dinosaurs, these terrible natural events caused unparalleled devastation. Still, no matter how severe the apocalypse, planet Earth, the Animal Planet, survives, and life, ever resilient, begins again.

ANIMAL ARMAGEDDON features a broad range of creatures from predatory sea monsters called nautiloids to dinosaurs to giant mammals including mastodons. The series also outlines the impact nature‘s wrath had on these animals and the life-forms to follow.
